WHAT IS STYLE?

So before I delve into what style is to me and what my style is and all of that, I want to make the difference between fashion and style, and then the difference between style and trends. Think of fashion as the big brand, the thing that you see on the billboards whilst you’re walking through the city, and think of style as the thing that make that billboard so interesting and so captivating and so big. To me, I feel that fashion is the major industry, but needs to be fuelled by these genius’s which impeccable creativity, STYLE and business techniques, to make fashion, the major influence it is today. Think of fashion as a machine. It gives to the public, it sells it’s what is on show, what is in the big magazines etc. However, what makes it so unique? The designers style. The designers style, vision, aesthetic, and their ability to put that through and express that through clothes, shoes and accessories and then give that as energy to fuel the big machine called fashion. This can also be seen through style icons such as Jane Birkin, David Bowie, Grace Jones and more modern ones such as Alexa Chung, Rihanna and Kate Moss. I feel that when finding the difference between style and fashion, style is somewhat, the big idea, and fashion is the thing that makes that idea happen.

Now, finding the difference between style and trends is easy. I see a lot of people wearing the same type of clothes, but in only a few peoples case is that it’s their “style,” and not a trend they’re following. In this context I see style more as another art form, and another way of expressing your personality. The real you. You can express yourself through writing in YOUR STYLE of writing, or painting and singing in YOUR STYLE of singing. Doing all these things in YOUR STYLE, is just another way of expressing you, and showing the world who you really are. Trends however, are just things that are popular in that particular time. If your style if part of a trend that is happening at the current time, then it’s fine. However, if you are always trying to change your look, and not because that’s your style, but because you want to be considered “fashionable,” then I think that’s very dangerous and toxic to you. This is because that trend isn’t YOU. Flaunting around trends that aren’t you, is basically the same as not being yourself, because those things don’t express anything to do with you. I feel, that this is why many people who have found their style, are also a lot more confident. This is because to be honest, the clothes you wear, are and indication to what you are like. It should help people who don’t know you, to be able to figure out what type of person you are.

You can also think of it this way. At 16, most people don’t really have much “style.” Another thing that a lot of people don’t have at 16, is a sense of purpose or direction with their lives. As people grow older, a lot of them tend to grow to accept themselves and grow into who they really are. Another thing that tends to happen during that period of time, is that the clothes they wear tend to change, and what they do decide to wear, are usually a reflection of themselves and something they are comfortable wearing.

For me, if I ever got the chance to tell somebody, I would say: “if you’ve only met me once, in a particular occasion and you think you’ve figured out my style, then you’re wrong.” This is because MY style, my personal style changes so much. I could channeling 100% Jane Birkin, then the next day layer everything and throw on a green cardigan and yell GRUNGE! Then on a Saturday night I could be channeling a 2015 MET Gala Rihanna or a 1993 Kate Moss. Who knows. No one does, and that’s because it’s me. Somebody else style may always have something similar about it whether it be an evening glam look or a lazy rainy day look. Either way, style is you, and trends, have nothing to do with it.

So, to summarise, trends are popular things that may or may not have anything to do with you, fashion is the big muscle guy that advertises all of these brilliant people and their amazing style, and style is basically just another way of expressing yourself, but instead of it being through music, it’s through cotton and silk.
